What happens if someone calls the police when your dog is out loose?
My dog got out (this would not be the first time this has happened). He apparently was barking at someone walking down the street I believe. His bark is worse than this bite as they would say. I know there are leash laws. Well this person must have called the police because they came to my door. I know they have a police report written up and he did not harm to anyone. What happens if this happens again? Could my family get sent to jail?
My dog is 10 years old. When we open our door to get in the house he is usually standing right there and gets out. Before he used to jump over our 6 foot wood fence and run around. This has been going on for a while. It’s hard to control a dog that is faster than you.

The worst you’ll have is a fine to pay. Nobody’s going to jail. They’re not going to put the dog to sleep unless it hurt someone. Don’t worry.
No one will go to jail unless your dog actually attacks and seriously harms a human being. Then you could be held liable.
However your dog may be taken away to a shelter and put to sleep. Be responsible and keep your dog under control. Otherwise you have no right to complain.
I dont think you or your family would get put in jail but your dog could face euthanasia and your family could face a large fine..and if your dog actually bit someone even if it was not his fault it would be bad news for you and your dog… do your dog a favor and keep him penned up better….
**Edit: try putting a leash by the door and attaching it to your dog prior to opening it…smile**
You thank the person who called the police.
You will probably get fined. If it continues, the dog may be confiscated, or you may be charged with a stronger crime.
Figure out how your dog is getting out and fix the problem.
Edit: "It’s hard to control a dog that is faster than you." No, it’s not. Most dogs are faster than humans. Even 3 legged dogs are faster than humans. Get the dog into training and teach him to "sit" when you enter the house. You CAN teach an old dog new tricks, you just have to want to.
It depends on what leash laws you all have there. Probably just a fine unless this is a continual problem or he is a danger to others.
you might get a fine from the animal control in your area. no you will not go to jail. please try to keep your dog from getting loose because people can keep complaining and one never knows what that may do.
They may take the dog away from you and also fine you. Or they may just fine you. You should really look into the laws in your town covering roaming dogs.
For one, your family will not be sent to jail. If they have leash laws, you will get a ticket for it. I had a friend who had his dog get loose and the cops were called and he recieved a ticket for it.
They can fine you and take the dog away if you are not around when the dog gets out. A fine is the usual outcome.
Leash laws are city ordinances (city laws) so it would all depend on what city you live in. If you tell us what city you live in, it is possible that we could give you more detailed help.
BUT, regardless of what city you live in, if you are in the USA, no one is going to jail over first violation of a leash law. Losing your dog is a much more real possibility.
If you are really worried about it, go to the local library or town hall where they will have a copy of the local laws (probably called the municipal code) and you can look up the leash laws yourself. Heck, if you are in a big city they could be online.
EDIT: Dog bites, you usually can’t be sued or imprisoned if your dog has never bit anyone before. If he has bitten before, or if you knew he was dangerous for any reason, you better get his butt inside!
In most localities, you would be cited for a leash-law violation, which is equivalent to a non-moving violation. I know of no municipality that would impose a jail sentence except under an habitual offender law, which would only happen if you continued to be cited and made no apparent effort to correct the problem. Normally, only the dog’s owner is cited.
The dog cannot be taken away without a hearing. See the Fifth Amendment of the US Constitution.
Don’t try to do it if someone calls the police they might send animal control.
No jail unless dog attacks. . people don’t go to jail for dogs barking at other people. It’s just a waist of time. Your neighbor is just bein a meany. She could have just told you your dog was lose, but instead she called the cops. Does your neighborhood have a kind of board were people get togethar and talk about stuff goin on?? Well, try going to one of the meetings and complaining about it. Good luck.
You won’t go to jail, but the dog will end up in the pound or the SPCA. The charges increase with the amount of times he’s put in there. Could be very costly.
I know in CA each city/county has its own regulations with dogs. Some dogs arent allowed in certain city/countys here. How it happens here is the police send out animal control and you may or may not get a fine, depends if your dog is registered. If it is not you get a fine as well as a grace period to register the dog. You wont go to jail but you are responsibile for your dogs actions…if he bit or attacked someone. I know some dogs barks are worse then the bite but dont forget there are people who are really afraid of dogs of any size and that have been the case….the person was just afraid. Check the yard and such to see how he got out.
My dog got out (this would not be the first time this has happened).
Regardless of weather you think your dog is a big softy or not, a dog “Out On There Own” Barking & Behaving aggressively towards a person walking along the street “is going to be intimidating “
So do your dog a favour either fix it so he\she can no longer escape or maybe think about re-homing him\her to someone willing to make the difference , Coz at the end ov the day its not your life on the line is it? Its your innocent dogs!!!!!!!!!!!!!
your dog is 10years old
the saying goes you cant teach a old dog new tricks, so maybe investing in a dog gate u no bit like a baby gate only higher and confining him to a room when u go out might work?
You have several problems here. First if he ever bites someone, with a report already filled about that incident it’s possible that your dog can be put to sleep, and you can be fined. If he never attacks anyone you can still be fined if he disturbs someone ( he doesn’t even have to bark, just his presence unleashed and unnatended can earn you a fine). It all depends on where you live. Then there’s the possible lawsuit if he hurts someone ( or causes psychological trauma). Jail time is only if you are criminally negligent, like knowingly having a dangerous dog and allowing him to escape and attack someone, wich doesn’t seem to be the case. You should consider other options to prevent this from happening, like installing a second door to your house ( if possible) so that when you go in there’s always a closed door between your dog and the street, playing with him more often and not keeping him alone for long periods of time, taking him to the street for walks more often ( properly leashed), maybe having a treat in your hand when you go inside the house (bacon for example) will keep him from trying to escape and concentrate on the food. Try to regulate his feeding time so that he always eats at fixed hours and is relatively hungry when you get home ( I don’t mean starve the dog) that way his attention will be more focused on food. If you can buy a feeder with a timer and keep it away from the front door, if it "gives" food at the time you get home hte dog might not try to go out, but you will still have to take him for a walk, that way he won’t feel restless. Try a combination of the above, the ones that you think might work for your specific situation. My favorite combination is long walks with your dog ( good for both of you) regulate feeding time and treat in your hand when you get home.Hope this helps
