What will make chinchillas lose their hair on their body and will it grow back?

I know chinchillas can release their fur to get away from their enemies. I do have other animals around him. He has the undercoat, so hes not totally without hair. The fluffy hair is gone though.
Ive had him around other animals for almost a year, so I would think that hes used to them.

What do you mean by you have other animals around him? Do you let them play together? Are they barking dogs? I breed chinchillas so if you ever need answers to your questions you can email me any time (chinchillas@csonline.net). Are you sure he hasn’t fur chewed all his fur off? If you could possibly email a picture of him to me I could help you determine the hair loss.
that is exactly why he lost his fur. its a defense mechanism for chins. how long have you had him with the other animals? usually they will get used to them. the fur should grow back within the next week and a half or so. GOOD LUCK!
